Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 2 June 2017 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Jun 1 to uplink a flight software patch to update the Telescope health check thresholds. This is required due to continued spacecraft heating trends. Increased thresholds will minimize the risk of thermal safing actions or the need for disabling SCS 26. Additional real-time procedures will be executed to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the patch. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory images maintained on the ground.

A Chandra press release was issued on May 31 describing observations of black holes. The results argued against the possibility that only a small fraction of galaxies during the first billion years after the Big Bang contain supermassive black holes. Also, although these early black holes were likely obscured by thick clouds of material, most of the X-rays would have been able to penetrate these clouds. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/17_releases/press_053117.html

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of HD80404 coordinated with HST, and an observation of SN 2017eaw, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on May 17.
