During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the seventh and eighth (and last) eclipse of the season on Jul 9 and 12 respectively with nominal power and thermal performance. Real-time procedures were executed on Jul 12 to disable SCS-29 and to dump and clear the EPS glitch counters as post-eclipse season actions. Of note this week was the announcement on Jul 10 of the Cycle 19 Peer Review recommended programs. For details see: http://cxc.cfa.harvard.edu/target_lists/cycle19/index.html A Chandra image release was issued on Jul 12 describing observations of the giant molecular cloud known as W51, one of the closest to Earth at a distance of about 17,000 light years. A composite image of W51 including data from Chandra and Spitzer shows that the X-ray emitting young stars are often clumped together closely and bathe their surroundings in high-energy light.
