During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A real-time procedure was executed on Feb 7 to perform a routine self-check of the Electrical Interface Assembly (EIA) Sequencer. A Chandra press release was issued on Apr 2 describing observations of the cold front located in the Perseus galaxy cluster that extends for about two million light years. The cold front consists of a relatively dense band of gas with a "cool" temperature of about 30 million degrees moving through lower density hot gas with a temperature of about 80 million degrees. Over time, the front has remained extremely sharp rather than becoming diffuse. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/18_releases/press_040318.html A Chandra press release was issued on Apr 3 announcing the selection of the 2018 Einstein Fellows, who will conduct research related to physics of how the universe works. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/18_releases/press_040318fellowships.html A Chandra press release was issued on Apr 4 describing archival analysis demonstrating the existence of a dozen black hole-low mass binaries in their inactive state gathered around Sgr A*. The authors extrapolated from their analysis that there must be anywhere from 300 to 500 black hole-low mass binaries and about 10,000 isolated black holes in the area surrounding Sgr A*. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/18_releases/press_040418.html Also of note this week was the Chandra Quarterly Review conducted on Apr 4 in Cambridge. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of 3FGL J1544-1125 coordinated with the VLA. |
