During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Real-time procedures were executed on Sep 10-12 to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the flight software patch uplinked on Sep 9 to update several Telescope subsystem K-Constants to prevent grating insertion/retraction movement failures. The dumps will be used to update the baseline memory images maintained on the ground. A Chandra image release was issued on Sep 12 describing observations of the supernova remnant SNR 0519-69.0. Researchers combined the data from Chandra and Hubble with data from the Spitzer Space telescope to determine how long ago the star in SNR 0519 exploded. The team measured the speeds of material in the blast wave from the explosion, which range from about 6 million to 9 million kilometers per hour. If the speed was toward the upper end of those estimates, the explosion would be about 670 years old. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2022/snr0519/ Of note this week was the release on Sep 12 of preliminary data access to the Chandra Source Catalog version 2.1. This version adds observations released publicly between January 1, 2015 and the end of 2021. In addition to adding 7 years of data, CSC 2.1 ties the catalog to the Gaia astrometric reference frame and includes new algorithms that improve X-ray source position determination and aperture photometry. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of MSH 15-52, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Jan 7 and is coordinated with IXPE, and an observation of M15 X-2, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Sep 13. |
