During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the 4th, 5th, and 6th eclipses of the season on Oct 8, 11, and 14 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A Chandra press release was issued on Oct 13 describing observations that provide evidence for "missing" mass in the form of gigantic strands, or filaments, of superheated gas. This proposed difficult-to-detect matter is known as the "warm-hot intergalactic medium" or WHIM. Scientists have used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to look for the WHIM for years, but few searches have been successful. A new Chandra study of colliding galaxy clusters in Abell 98 provides new signs for the existence of the WHIM. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/22_releases/press_101322.html Of note this week was the release of the Sherpa 4.15.0 package for Python. This release includes various enhancements, documentation updates, bug fixes, and infrastructure changes. For details see: https://github.com/sherpa/sherpa/releases/tag/4.15.0 The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of AT2022tsd, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Oct 7 and is coordinated with NuSTAR, an observation of Gaia BH1, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity, and an observation of Swift J1913.1+1946, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Oct 12. |
