Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 30 August 2024 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Chandra passed through the fourth, fifth, and sixth eclipses of the season on Aug 23, 26 and 28, respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance.

A Chandra image release was issued on Aug 26 describing the new sonifications commemorating the 25th anniversary of Chandra's "First Light" images. Cassiopeia A was one of the first objects Chandra observed after it launched into space on July 23, 1999. Sonification is a scientific and math-based process that translates data into notes and sounds. In addition to Cas A, the new sonifications include the star-forming region of 30 Doradus and the galaxy NGC 6872. For details see: https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2024/sonify9/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of AT2024qfm, which is a follow-up to a Target of Opportunity which was accepted on Aug 1 and is coordinated with NuSTAR, an observation of Sgr A* which is coordinated with JWST, ALMA, and NuStar, and an observation of XTE J1701-462 which is a follow-up to a Target of Opportunity accepted on Mar 28, 2023.
