During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as
planned.
A Chandra media telecon was held on June 21 describing observations of the galactic black hole system GRO J1655-40 that show for the first time that powerful magnetic fields are the key to understanding how energy is released from the regions surrounding these ubiquitous objects. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/06_releases/press_062106.html A second press release was issued on June 20 describing studies of the jet in the quasar 3C273 that show that the most energetic radiation from the jet arises through direct radiation from extremely energetic particles (synchrotron radiation) rather than via the scattering of microwave background photons (inverse Compton radiation). The schedule of targets for next week is shown below and includes observations of M81 and IRAS 19132+1035 coordinated with the VLA. |
