| On July 23, we celebrated the 8th anniversary of Chandra's launch and
8 years of successful scientific operations. The spacecraft and
instruments continue to operate superbly well and we look forward with
excitement to the coming year of science discovery!
During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A ground system anomaly resulted in a missed pass on July 23 however the ground team was able to return the system to operations in time for the next contact and no science data were lost. A Chandra press release was issued on Jul 24 describing new results that show that supermassive black holes grow more rapidly in young galaxy clusters. These "fast-track" supermassive black holes can have a big influence on the galaxies and clusters that they live in.
