During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as
planned.
A real-time procedure was conducted on 24 Sep to insert the HRC +Y shutter in a series of steps into the optical beam during an observation of the Crab Nebular with the HRC and the LETG. The test data will be used to evaluate the potential of the technique to block the bright central part of the object in order to make visible the fainter surrounding emission. A test was conducted on 22 Sep during a long observation to turn off the ACIS detector housing heater to assess the thermal time constant associated with the housing cooling. Analysis of the temperature and fid-light data indicated expected trends. Further tests will be conducted during future observations at different pitch angles to validate predictions under a range of thermal conditions. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes a series of long observations of the Chandra Deep Field South and the Chandra Deep Proto-cluster Field. |
