I am pleased to pass along details of two awards recently made to the Chandra Team: the AIAA Space Systems Award and the Smithsonian National Air and Space (NASM) 2000 Trophy.
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) presented the Chandra X-ray Observatory team of NASA/MSFC, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and TRW Space and Electronics Group, with their Space Systems Award for successfully designing, developing, building, launching, deploying and operating the worlds most capable X-ray telescope. Dr. Martin C. Weisskopf was selected to receive the award on behalf of the Chandra team in a ceremony on the 20 September in San Diego. The NASM 2000 Trophy for Current Achievement has been awarded to the Chandra X-ray Observatory Team and the citation reads in part, "Planning, building, and successfully placing this observatory in orbit required the commitment and precision of teams of scientists, engineers, technicians, and managers at numerous government centers, universities, and corporations around the world". The award will be presented to the MSFC Director, Mr. Art Stephenson, at a dinner at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum on November 9. During the last week, Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Real-time procedures completed during the week included a routine check of the CPE Warm Start Count (value remained at 1) and the an on-board Ephemeris update. A CAP was also run to power down SSR-B following the unexpected swap on 29 Sept. The fault-tree analysis points to the most likely cause for the swap as a single bit glitch causing the OBC software to detect a condition that requires a swap from SSR-A to SSR-B. Analysis of telemetry shows all actions are consistent with an OBC commanded swap. All recording and playbacks since 29 Sept have been nominal. The planned observations for the coming week are as follows. |
