During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as
planned.
The ASVT and Science Instrument EGSE were shut down due to a water leak at the Operations Control Center on Feb 24. The leak was due to a rupture in a water filtration system located on the floor above the OCC. Following repair of the leaking system, the ASVT and SI EGSE equipment were checked out. The ASVT is fully operational however a number of computers associated with the Science Instrument EGSE were damaged and will be replaced. Discussions have begun with the landlord to take steps to ensure future leaks will not occur. A Chandra press release was issued on Feb 26 announcing the discovery of the oldest pulsar ever detected in X-rays. The pulsar, PSR J0108-1431, is about 200 million years old. Among isolated pulsars, it is over 10 times older than the previous record holder with an X-ray detection. At a distance of 770 light years, it is one of the nearest pulsars known. For details, see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/09_releases/press_022609.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below. |
