During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as
planned.
Chandra passed through the fifth and sixth eclipses of the 2009 winter season on Dec 7 and 9 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A real-time procedure was completed on Dec 8 to update the on-board ephemeris. A Chandra image release was issued on Dec 10 of NGC 6872 and IC 4970, two galaxies in the process of merging. This composite image of data from Chandra, Spitzer and ESO's Very Large Telescope shows that IC 4970 has stripped cold gas from NGC 6872 and is using it to feed its growing black hole. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2009/ngc6872/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below |
