Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 15 October 2010 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

An aspect camera dark current calibration was performed from the on-board loads on Oct 15. The calibration will be used to assess the increase in the number of CCD warm pixels.

A Chandra image release was issued on Oct 14 of the neutron star, SGR 0418+5729. Observations with NASA's Chandra, Swift, and Rossi X-ray observatories, Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, and ESA's XMM-Newton have revealed that a slowly rotating neutron star with an ordinary surface magnetic field is giving off bursts of X-rays and gamma rays. This discovery may indicate the presence of an internal magnetic field much more intense than the surface magnetic field, with implications for how the most powerful magnets in the cosmos evolve. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2010/sgr0418/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes a series of observations of the comet 103P/Hartley 2.
