Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 29 October 2010 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Oct 27 to perform a diagnostic dump of the Central Processing Electronics (CPE). A second real-time procedure was executed on Oct 28 to re-initialize the flight software Thruster Command Processing subfunction in order to prevent the occurrence of an overflow condition.

Preparations are complete for the start of the fall 2010 eclipse season beginning on Nov 2. This season contains 11 eclipses and will end on Nov 21.

A Chandra image release was issued on Oct 26 of the galaxy cluster 3C186. The new Chandra observation of 3C186 reveals a very distant galaxy cluster with a quasar and a "cooling core" at its center. Cooling cores are regions bright in X-ray emission where gas is cooling. Finding a system like this at such a great distance, 8 billion light years, is unusual and could provide insight into the triggering of quasars and the growth of galaxy clusters. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes a series of observations of the comet 103P/Hartley 2 and observations of J193239.6+382518, J192630.6+413314, J191016.9+392951, J192430.2+510146, J191438.6+502857, and J194016.3+463251, which were accepted as Director's Discretionary Time TOOs on Oct 20.
