Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 20 May 2011 9.00am EST

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Chandra passed through the fifteenth and sixteenth eclipses of the spring season on May 22 and 24 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A real-time procedure was executed on May 20 to clear a glitch counter that incremented during eclipse exit on May 19. The counter increment is expected under certain timing and thermal conditions. A second real-time procedure was executed on May 26 to update the on-board ephemeris.

A Chandra press release was issued on May 24 as a NASA press release discussing Chandra observations of the Carina Nebula. Chandra has detected over 14,000 stars in this region, revealed a diffuse X-ray glow, and provided strong evidence that supernovas have already occurred in this massive complex of young stars. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/11_releases/press_052411.html

Of note this week was the "12-Years of Science with Chandra" meeting-in-a-meeting at the AAS meeting in Boston MA.

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of M15 X-2 and a New PWN Candidate, which were accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time TOOs on May 18 and May 6 respectively, and observations of MAXI J1543-564 and GRB 110422A,, which were accepted as Targets of Opportunity on May 20 and May 10 respectively.
