During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the second, third, and fourth eclipses of the fall season on Sep 23, 26, and 28 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A real-time procedure was executed on Sep 27 to set the short eclipse flag to "false" following the completion of this season's short eclipses. A second real-time procedures was executed on Sep 29 to update the on-board ephemeris. A Chandra image release was issued on Sep 28 describing observations of NGC 281, a relatively nearby cloud of gas and dust that lies high above the plane of the Milky Way galaxy. Its location makes NGC 281 a good target for astronomers who want to study "high-mass" stars, those that contain 8 times the Sun's mass or more. These stars play an important role in galaxies, but are generally poorly understood because they are hard to observe. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2011/ngc281/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of Jupiter, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Sep 22, an observation of IGR J17091-3624, which is a follow-up to a Target of Opportunity accepted on Jul 22, an observation of GX 349+2 coordinated with RXTE, and an observation of IGRJ17091-3624 coordinated with the VLA. The schedule also includes the commanding for placing Chandra in the required configuration and attitude for the Draconid meteor shower on Oct 8. |
