During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the 24th and 25th eclipses of the season on Oct 5 and 8 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A real-time procedure was executed on Oct 8 to set the short eclipse flag to "true" in preparation for the 26th and final eclipse of the season. Chandra passed through this final eclipse on Oct 11, with nominal power and thermal performance. Real-time procedures were executed on Oct 11 to set the short eclipse flag to "false", to disable SCS-29, and to dump and clear the EPS glitch counters as post-eclipse season actions. A Chandra image release was issued on Oct 10 with composite images of four planetary nebulae using Chandra and Hubble data. A planetary nebula results when a star like the sun becomes a red giant and sheds its outer layers. The diffuse X-ray emission seen with Chandra is caused by shock waves as a wind from the hot remnant of the star collides with the ejected atmosphere. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2012/pne/ Of note last week was the Chandra User Committee meeting held at the CXC on Oct 10-11. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of Eta Car coordinated with HST, an observation of SDSS J101246.59+061604.7 coordinated with the EVLA,a and observations of Sgr A* coordinated with NuSTAR, Keck, VLT, SMA, CSO, CARMA, ALMA, EHT, HESS, and ATCA. |
