During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A real-time procedure was used to monitor the momentum unload that was executed from the on-board command loads on Dec 18; the unload performance was nominal. A Chandra image release was issued on Dec 17 describing observations of two binaries that may become AM Canum Venaticorum (or, AM CVn, for short) systems, J075141 and J174140. AM CVn are a rare class of objects where one white dwarf is pulling material from a compact companion star, such as a second white dwarf. As the orbit between these white dwarfs shrink, scientists predict ripples in space-time will be given off. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2013/amcvn/ The schedule of targets for the next two weeks is shown below and includes a follow-up observation of GRB 130907A, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Sep 27, observations of SDSS J1537+2716 and SDSS J1534+5034 coordinated with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope and observations of BP Tau coordinated with the KPNO 4-m telescope. |
