Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 24 July 2015 9.00am EDT

On Jul 23, we celebrated the 16th anniversary of Chandra's launch and 16 years of successful scientific operations. The spacecraft and instruments continue to operate superbly well and we look forward with excitement to the coming year of science discovery!

During the last week the observing schedule was replanned to incorporate observations of V404 Cyg, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Jul 14. Loads for the replanned schedule were uplinked on Jul 24. A scheduled observation of G1.9+0.3 was impacted and will be rescheduled in future weeks.

Chandra passed through the fifth, sixth, and seventh eclipses of the season on Jul 18, 21, and 23 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance.

A Chandra press release was issued on Jul 22 describing a fast-moving pulsar that appears to have punched a hole in a disk of gas around its companion star and launched a fragment of the disk outward at a speed of about 4 million miles per hour. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/15_releases/press_072215.html

In addition a Chandra image release and photo album was issued on Jul 23 celebrating "Chandra's Sweet 16". For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2015/16th/

The schedule for the next two weeks is shown below and includes observations of V404 Cyg, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Jul 2 and as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Jul 14, and is coordinated with VLA, and H1743-322, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Jun 8 and is coordinated with VLA and NuSTAR, and GROJ1750-27, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on May 11, and M28, which is coordinated with NRAO-GBT, and MWC 656, which is coordinated with VLA, and GJ667C, which is coordinated with HST.
