Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 22 April 2016 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Real-time procedures were executed on Apr 20 and 21 to turn off the on-board ranging drive function during communications contacts with the Deep-Space Network ground station DSS-54. This action is taken to collect additional characterization data on this station's performance, in order to understand the cause for regular instances of dropped telemetry frames when using this station.

A Chandra image release was issued on Apr 18 describing observations of Comet ISON and Comet PanSTARRS when these comets were relatively close to the Earth. The X-ray emission is produced when a wind of particles from the Sun strikes the comet's atmosphere. The Chandra data was used to estimate the composition of the solar wind, finding values that agree with independent measurements. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2016/comets/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of IGR J17091-3624, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Mar 25 and is coordinated with NuSTAR, and observations of 2MASS J10051641+1703264, and 2MASS J11280702+0141304 coordinated with ground-based observatories.
