During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A Chandra image release was issued on Aug 10 describing observations of Hanny's Voorwerp, a cloud of gas that is glowing due to radiation from the giant black hole at the center of the galaxy IC 2497. Astronomers think the giant black hole in IC 2497 used to power a quasar in the past, but has faded in the last 200,000 years. Chandra data suggests that jets powered by the black hole have blown a bubble in surrounding gas. By observing both of these objects, astronomers can probe the history of IC 2497's black hole and its effect on its host galaxy. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2016/ic2497/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of ASASSN-15lh, which is part of a series of visits of a Target of Opportunity accepted on Oct 19, an observation of 2MASS J23383392+0624518 coordinated with ground-based observatories and an observation of M82 NuSTAR coordinated with NuSTAR. |
