Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 14 October 2016 9.00am EDT

During the last week observing schedule was replanned to incorporate an observation of RX And, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Oct 12.

A Chandra press release was issued on Oct 11 as a CfA press release describing observations of Proxima Centauri that reveal a regular 7-year cycle of starspots, similar to the 11-year cycle seen on the Sun. However, the Proxima Centauri cycle is far more dramatic and at least one fifth of the star surface is covered in spots at the peak. This is surprising because current stellar theory predicts that this small, cool, red dwarf has a convective zone all the way into the star's core and should not experience a regular cycle of activity. This stellar activity may pose problems for habitability on the recently discovered Earth-sized planet since flares or a stellar wind could strip the atmosphere. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/16_releases/press_101116.html

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of PSR J1023+0038 coordinated with the VLA, an observation of GRS 1739-278, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Sep 21 and is coordinated with the VLA and NuSTAR, an observation of 4U 1630-47, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Oct 6, an observation of CXOU J103844.8+533003, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Sep 22and is coordinated with EVN/e-MERLIN, and an observation of Gaia16apd, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity series on Jun 27.
