Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 21 October 2016 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Oct 21 to perform a diagnostic dump of the Control Processing Electronics (CPE).

A Chandra image release was issued on Oct 14 with six new images containing Chandra data have been released to celebrate American Archives Month. The Chandra Data Archive ultimately houses all of the observations obtained by the telescope. The scientific community and the public have free access to the data in Chandra's archive. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2016/archives/

A Chandra press release was issued on Oct 19 describing observations of two objjects found in the elliptical galaxies NGC 5128 (also known as Centaurus A) and NGC 4636. The two flaring objects in two different galaxies may represent an entirely new phenomenon. These objects brighten in X-rays by a factor of 100 in about a minute before returning to previous level in about an hour. There are several important differences between these objects and magnetars, which are also known to flare rapidly in X-rays. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/16_releases/press_101916.html

Of note this week was the Einstein Fellows Symposium held in Cambridge MA on Oct 18-19. Presentations were made by 35 current Fellows, covering a wide range of topics in observational and theoretical astrophysics research.

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of PSR J1119-6127, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Aug 2.
