Chandra X-ray Images of CDF-S and CDF-S Transient
Scientists using Chandra have discovered a mysterious flash of X-rays in the deepest X-ray image ever obtained, The X-ray source is located in the CDF-S region, shown in the full field image where red, green, and blue are low, medium, and high-energy X-rays respectively. The mysterious source (close-up images) erupted and became at least a factor of 1,000 brighter in X-rays over a few hours. After about a day, the source had faded completely below the sensitivity of Chandra. While scientists think this source likely comes from some sort of destructive event, its properties do match any known phenomenon and may be of a variety that scientists have never seen before.

Chandra X-ray Image & Hubble Optical Image of CDF-S Transient
The Chandra X-ray image of the transient discovered in the Chandra Deep Field-South is shown on the left. On the right is a Hubble Space Telescope optical image of the same field. It shows a small galaxy located about 10.7 billion light years from Earth that likely contains the mysterious transient.
